Default I'm new, need a little help

I bought this game 2 days ago, and I really dig this game so far. My main problem is with money. I've had to pay people to run me through some quests and missions. I know this game is a bit hard, but some of the important quests are apparently so hard to do that you need to pay someone. My guild recommended paying off 20s to do stuff like Capture Son in the factions campaign.

Anyway, After leaving that guild, I've tried to upgrade my armor. I'm at the point where each armor piece costs 1 platinum piece to make and requires a few crafting materials, bringing each piece's total to about 1 platinum and 500 gold.

I'm level 16 and I need to make some cash. I'm having way too hard of a time doing "simple" missions and quests because I die so fast and easily.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Its only like that at the start of Factions, once you level up abit more and get proper lvl20 henchman it'll get alot easier, and the money will slowly come in.

If you're a new player you shouldn't get run anywhere - remember the game is not intended to be run.

Running is for people who know the quests/missions and just want a fast way through.

Since this is your first time you'll miss a lot of the experience and actual gameplay ....

Do all the quests and missions and you'll have enough money.
Skip any quest you can't do and come back later.
Read up on the quest/mission on wiki for tips and advice.

Don't get run through the game on your first time through - you'll ruin the storyline and experience.

First of all, no mission or quest is too hard to do. You don't need a run through any of them, because just think about it: If you got a run through the mission then shouldn't it be easy to do it with a full party? In the future, try joining other player's parties, because every profession has something useful to add into a group.

Also, if you want to make money to buy your maximum armor (the highest protection rating you can get in the game) then I suggest either taking henchmen along and clearing an area, or experimenting with your skills to see if you can take on some enemies by yourself. (Which might decrease the frequency of drops but will increase the gold you get to keep.)

Also, bring a standard ID kit with you and identify every item you come across. (Unless it's a crafting material or collectible drop.) Even a white sword will increase in value if you ID it, so by paying a small amount of cash for the kit, you get a decent sum back.

Lastly, if you tell me which Guild Wars game you're playing, I'll be able to offer you more detailed assistance. From the sound of the quests you've given as examples, I assume you're playing Factions.

Naga Pelts are dropped in the Lagoon and can be sold for a decent sum, or traded in for Remedies (providing you have the quest active) to increase your profit margin.

Imperial Commendations (5) can be traded in to get a superior salvage kit, which in turn can be sold to the merchant for 1,000g.

If you find an unidentified gold, you can usually sell it for 1,000g to people who are going for the "Seeker of Wisdom" title, although you should ID this item yourself if you plan on earning points for that track.

If you're playing a different GW, let me know and I'll give you tips for that one.

Yeah, it's factions that I'm playing. I bought all 3 after I tested nightfall for a bit, but I liked the ritualist class the best.

Thanks for all the helpful information. I will try sticking to missions and trying to earn money from those and quests rather then trying to farm already.

So, basically if I have a full party or players or henchmen, I get more item drops but less gold overall correct?

Yes, ever since a recent update to Guild Wars, a larger party size will yield more drops, excluding gold (rare) items, rare crafting materials, and green (boss) weapons.

For a slow and steady source of income, taking a group of henchmen will work just fine. You'll be able to pick up more items, but since you'll be sharing gold you'll get pretty much nothing in that respect.

Farming (or looting) is dangerous and most of the time a major investment in cash, but will offer greater rewards in the long run.

Since you're level 16, the perfect place is to go into the Lagoon and gather Naga Pelts. They sell for at least 200g a pop to other players. Selling them in the marketplace is usually the best for potential buyers.

And don't forget the Imperial Commendations. Exchange them for superior salvage kits. Just remember to never sell them to others, since people usually try and rip you off. (Common asking price is 100-150g per commendation, even though trading in 5 will get you a kit worth 1k at the merchant so 1,000 divided by 5 is 200g.)

First of all, don't pay people to run quests and missions. You can learn a lot by venturing out with henchies and trying different things. You'll pick up a lot more loot (remember to pick up EVERYTHING).

It also sounds like you've got to Kaineng Centre. There a lot of quests that start from there. Almost all of them reward you with money, exp. and an Imperial Commendation. These commendatrions can be sold to players (usually for around 100gold each), however hold on to them and get ID kits and Expert Salvage kits with them. ID everything you can before you sell it to the merchant. Salvage all armour pieces that drop from enemies (such as Am Fah capes and Jade Knight Vambraces), this will provide you with a lot of materials that you can either use or sell.

For now, don't buy any weapons from people. Use something that has dropped until you can comfortably afford to buy something better.

Well if he did factions, what did you do with the Monastery Credits you received from Shing Jea?

Those would be easily traded into the Monastery Quartermasters for 1 blue scroll (Scroll of adventurer's Insight) and then the scroll can be sold to the merchant for 100g.

I reached Cavalon (you will eventually) and I have around 25 of them.
So 25 x 100g = 2.5k (2,500g)
Certainly not much by any extent, but it's something.

And yea, just do quests from Kaineng which will net you XP, money and imperial commedations. As stated, sell them for 200g each or just trade them in to the Imperial Quartermasters.

If you've got to kaineng, and have all 3 chapters, I'd recommend you go to nightfall. Pick up at least the first 4-5 heroes, especially olias from the consulate docks area. A MM will make almost any quest much easier. The basic MM skills can be got pretty early (and a rit can use them as well so its not a waste of money or skill points) and hero skill points can get you some free skills since you've just started. Also, night fall has buried treasures, unlocked treasure chests etc that give out free plat and items. It's pretty easy to hit the first 4, which should give you about 3-4 plat and some items.

Also, maybe pop over to prophecies, they have quests that give you free skills which are useful to outfit your heroes and your secondary. You can also check out collectors gear. Look on www.guildwiki.org for collectors and the items they want, and what they give in return. A lot of max blue collector stuff is identical in function to green items, so you can outfit yourself and heroes pretty easy for free.

In factions and prophecies as well, you can trade collectors items for armour. For a rit, you can get full armour level 60 armour pieces for jade bracelets (chest armour), putrid cysts (gloves), plague idols (leggings) and venerable mantid pincers (shoes and headpiece). Think you need 5 of each, except for the mantid pincers which you need 10. All the collectors are pretty much near kaineng or the market place so easy to get to. So you can get max armour for free. You can't put insignia's on them (or that's what I've heard) but the armour should be more than enough to last. As you get money later, you can buy whatever armour you want piece buy piece and replace the collectors pieces.

Also, there's quite a few easy quests around kaineng that you can get that give out xp and gold where you only have to fight like one guy or just need to run around talking to people. Good for getting you up to lvl20.

Like people have already said, you really don't want to get run to places when it's your first character. It's a waste of money and experience.

Here are a few others things that I'm thinking of.

Try to avoid splitting your attribute points. Try to avoid distributing points in more than three attributes (usually a 11/10/10 split when you have all 300). If you have points left over, then dump those into another attribute that may help. Since you're a Rt, you could also take advantage of a lot of the Binding Rituals in Communing like Shelter, Union, and so on. You can also put some points into Channeling, which has some nice offensive skills.

Since you've said that you're getting run to places, you might've gotten run too far into the storyline, so your level is probably a bit low for the area. In general, I've found that a good gauge is to look at the level of henchmen in the outpost. If you aren't at least their level, that's not a good thing. I'd suggest at least a level or two above, unless it's 20, in which case you should be level 20.

Which henchmen are you bringing? Try to have a Monk, Warrior, and Elementalist, if you can. It's usually a pretty good balance, until you're more used to the area. Then, you can pick and choose.

The other possible issue is aggro (getting monsters to attack you). When you look at your compass, you'll see this frosty circle (AKA aggro bubble). When monster (after the ones early on) gets into that circle, they'll start attacking. Try to avoid taking on multiple groups at a time and remember that as a Rt, you have lower armor than a Warrior, who should be the main one taking damage. If you have monsters attacking you, and you're low on health with too little healing, try to move back and forth or circle around the Warrior, if no other enemes are nearby.

Also, carry a longbow in your inventory. Flag (little icon under the compass) the henchmen a little bit behind the spot where you want to pull. To pull, equip your Longbow, and get near the closest enemy of the group that you want to pull. Make sure that the enemy is selected, of course, then shoot at it when you have it just a little bit outside (bit more space than the dot that represents you) of your aggro bubble, and run back. Unflag the henchmen, and let them loose.

Hi and welcome to the GW community.

A great way to make money is to take advantage of the special events we have every now and then. This weekend is the repeat of the Dragon Festival being held in Shing Jea Monestary. This is a great opportunity to make a lot of money for your account. People will buy the Victory Tokens that you can get from doing the quests for a minimum of 20 gold. If you take a character through all 4 easy quests, you almost get a full stack of 250 tokens. Try to sell them for 25-30 gold each which means making about 5-7k for each character that does the quests.

Make a few new characters this weekend just to do the quests to get as many Victory Tokens as possible. You dont have to keep the chars, as you can delete the one you just made once the quests have been completed. Many players do this and make well over 50k which should be enough money to get your rit new skills and armor and whatever else you need.

Have fun and welcome to GW!
